Saint George’s, Grenada – On the sidelines of the 47th meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Saint George’s, Grenada, the Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, held fruitful discussions with the Austrian Ambassador to the Caribbean, H.E. Gerhard Doujak, to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting focused on a range of vital issues concerning the economies of both countries, including housing, renewable energy, and capacity building. Ambassador Doujak reiterated Austria’s commitment to providing the necessary support to Caribbean countries and EU member states, and he expressed Austria’s interest in expanding its consular and diplomatic presence for Caribbean nations in Vienna. He emphasized Austria’s desire to strengthen cooperation at both multilateral and bilateral levels.
In this context, Austria continues to support the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, which plays a pivotal role in climate mitigation, adaptation, and the transition to clean energy in the region, as well as supporting the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in disaster management efforts.
Deputy Prime Minister Hanley expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to meet with the Austrian Ambassador and for the cooperation opportunities presented. He highlighted the benefits of scholarships offered by Austria to Caribbean students and stressed the need to seize similar opportunities in skill development in key sustainable fields to transform Saint Kitts and Nevis into the first sustainable island state.
Hanley stated that this meeting represents a step forward in strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Austria, paving the way for further significant developments in the areas of housing and renewable energy in the region.
Also attending the meeting were Naima Hazel, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, and Bern Hazel, Senior Foreign Service Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
