Imagine yourself on your next trip to the UK without the need for a traditional visa. This is exactly what the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) offers—a digital travel permit that allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the UK more smoothly, avoiding the lengthy and complex visa procedures.
Who Can Apply?
If you’re a citizen of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE, you can easily apply for this authorization. However, please note that Jordanian citizens are no longer eligible for this permit, so we advise them to check alternative procedures available.
Who Doesn’t Need an ETA?
Do you already have a UK visa or a permit to reside or work there? If so, you are exempt from needing an ETA. Likewise, if you hold a British or Irish passport, a passport from British Overseas Territories, or you live in Ireland and are traveling to the UK, there’s no need to apply for the authorization.
What Does the ETA Allow You to Do?
With the ETA, you can visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family, short-term work, or studying. It also allows you to transit through the UK while traveling.
Despite its benefits, there are limitations. You cannot stay in the UK for more than 6 months, work, receive government funding, or live there permanently. If you’re planning to get married or register a civil partnership, you will need a special visit visa.
Application Fees and Payment Methods:
The application costs £10 per person, including children. The fee is non-refundable, so make sure you’re ready before applying. You can pay via credit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
You can submit your application quickly through the ETA app or the official website. The processing time is around 3 working days, or even faster in some cases. If you are traveling with a group, remember that each person must submit a separate application, and you may receive decisions at different times.
In conclusion, you will receive an email confirming that you have obtained your ETA, which will be valid for multiple entries over two years. If you change your passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA.
Important Tip: Even with an ETA, the border officer or UK government retains the right to control who can enter the country.
