A Guide to the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Requirements

(ETA) Requirements

News Details

Starting from January 8, 2025, all travelers to the United Kingdom holding visa-exempt passports, including citizens of the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, as well as some Caribbean countries such as Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Grenada, and Antigua and Barbuda, will be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering or transiting through its borders.

What’s New?

Previously, travelers from visa-exempt countries could visit the UK without any additional requirements. With the introduction of the ETA system, completing a mandatory digital authorization has become essential to enhance border security. While this new requirement does not alter the visa-exempt status of Caribbean nationals, obtaining an ETA is now a crucial step before traveling.

Key Information About the ETA

The ETA is not a visa; it is a digital measure designed to streamline travel, enhance security, and prevent individual issues at airports.

Who Needs an ETA?

  • Holders of visa-exempt passports intending to visit the UK for tourism, business, short-term study, or family visits.
  • Travelers transiting through UK borders.

How to Apply?

  • Applications can be submitted through the official UK government website or the ETA app, available on iOS and Android devices.
  • Requirements: A valid passport, a functional email address, and a credit or debit card to pay the £10 fee (approximately $12.49).
  • Processing Time: Most applications are processed within three business days, but early application is recommended to avoid delays.

Validity Period

  1. The ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
  2. It allows multiple entries to the UK for stays of up to six months per visit.

Who is Exempt from the ETA Requirement?

  • Holders of valid UK visas.
  • Individuals authorized to live, work, or study in the UK, including those with permanent or temporary residency.
  • British or Irish citizens.
  • Residents of Ireland traveling from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.
  • Dual nationals holding British or Irish passports.

Distinguishing ETA from ETIAS

It is important to note that the ETA system is specific to the UK and is separate from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) implemented by the European Union. Travelers will need to apply for both authorizations independently if planning to visit the UK and EU countries when ETIAS comes into effect.
