Expanding European Horizons: Bulgaria and Romania’s Entry into the Schengen Area

In a historic step, 27 countries unanimously agreed to abolish restrictions on the air and sea borders of Bulgaria and Romania as of 31 March 2024, according to a statement issued in the European capital, Brussels.

This announcement reflects the European Union’s dedication to expanding cooperation and integration among its member states. It is anticipated to bolster opportunities in the realms of economy, culture, travel, and tourism, yielding positive effects.

On its part, the European Commission expressed its satisfaction with the decision, which comes after more than 12 years of negotiations.  The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated in a press release, “Today represents a historic moment for Bulgaria and Romania, a day of great pride for Bulgarian and Romanian citizens.” She added that the expansion of the Schengen Area would bolster the European Union’s strength as a unified entity, both domestically and internationally.

She clarified that the decision was made following thorough evaluation processes conducted by both countries.  Throughout 2022 and 2023, numerous fact-finding missions were dispatched to the external borders of Bulgaria and Romania to verify their readiness to join the Schengen Area.

It is noteworthy that the historic Schengen Agreement, which was signed in 1985, includes 23 countries out of the 27 that make up the European Union, in addition to four countries outside the Union: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The agreement resulted in the emergence of the Schengen Area, which allows freedom of travel and movement within and across its member states and the sharing of a unified visa policy.
