Updates on visa regulations for holders of Dominica and Vanuatu passports in Ireland

Minister of Justice, Mrs. Helen McEntee, announced that as of Thursday, March 7, 2024, citizens of Dominica, Honduras, and Vanuatu will be required to obtain a visa before traveling to Ireland. Additionally, there will be a need to obtain a transit visa when traveling to another destination via Ireland.

In response to this announcement, Minister McEntee stated,

‘’This carefully considered decision will make Ireland more aligned with the visa system in the United Kingdom and the Schengen Area’’.

The introduction of visa requirements for citizens of Honduras, Dominica, and Vanuatu is part of an ongoing process to make Ireland more aligned with the visa systems in the United Kingdom and the Schengen Area. This followed the introduction of visa requirements for Bolivian citizens in September 2023 and for convention travel document holders in July 2022.

Minister McEntee also announced the lifting of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports from Indonesia, Qatar, Kuwait, Montenegro, Moldova, Turkey, Colombia, Peru, and Georgia. Additionally, visa requirements have been lifted for holders of official passports, service passports, or public affairs passports accompanying government ministers of the respective countries on an official visit to Ireland. Reciprocal arrangements apply to Irish diplomats traveling to these countries as well.

During the announcement of these changes, Minister McEntee stated,

‘’The lifting of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports and accompanying officials of visiting ministers will strengthen close relations in political, economic, and cultural fields and continue to foster a strong relationship with those countries’’.

Irish visa requirements remain subject to ongoing review, taking into consideration the need to ensure effective immigration controls while also facilitating those who wish to travel to Ireland for purposes of visiting, working, studying, or joining family members.
